Winter Flea Kicks Off This Weekend!

Berg'n

Come check out the new home of the Brooklyn Flea. I have been setting up my booth all week and watching the space come together. There's excitement in the air.

Berg'n

Here's what the folks at the flea have to say about it:

Leaves are changing, football season’s in full swing, the bars have cider. It’s fall. Not to worry, we won’t leave you out in the cold.

Starting November 8+9, our operation moves indoors for the annual Winter Flea + Holiday Market, to a single Brooklyn location: 1000 Dean (btw. Classon + Franklin Ave.), which just so happens to be directly connected to our new beer hall, Berg’n. (Stroke of luck, that.) Just off Franklin Ave., the 30,000+sf space (sneak peek below) is in the heart of Crown Heights, close to the 2/3 and C trains. (Take both to Franklin Ave.: the 2/3 at Eastern Parkway, the C at Fulton St.)

334

With more than 100 high-quality vendors in a polished, airy setting that spans three distinct, connected spaces, the The Winter Flea + Holiday Market will feature a little bit of everything: familiar and new faces; loads of antiques, salvage, and furniture; our best handmade and jewelry vendors; cool new and vintage clothes; special events; and of course a dozen or so food vendors to keep you satiated. We’re gonna do a stroller and coat check to free your body and mind.

And if/when you get thirsty, Berg’n beckons with its dozen drafts, 50+ bottles and cans, bloody marys, and natural wine—plus Asia Dog, Mighty Quinn’s BBQ, Pizza Moto, and Ramen Burger. It’s all a far cry from sitting on the basement floor at One Hanson in years past!

The Flea’s heating up for winter. See ya there.

Here are some sneek peaks from my week setting up:

Hunting Season & October Sale

IMG_4231

In honor of October, I'm pleased to announce a sale (in my etsy shop, my Brooklyn Flea booth and my brick and mortar shop) on all things macabre, anatomical and shooting-related.

9271008

I have been digging through drawers and drawers of paper and pulling out some truly great stuff- rare targets that I have been saving for years. It just seems like a good time to bring 'em out. I'll be adding to the target selection in my etsy shop over the next week, so keep checking back. I will also have a select few of my favorite pieces in my booth at the Brooklyn Flea in Ft. Greene.

Antique German Shooting Target- Uncut Sheet $50

There are only three more Saturdays left this season to shop in the great outdoors. Williamsburg is done until next year. The indoor flea begins Nov 8th & 9th. Read all about that spiffy new location here. I realized while writing this post that I've been using this composed photo for six years as my Brooklyn Flea thumbnail….I guess I go way back with the targets.

From my archives (and just a few from others') here is a veritable shooting gallery of favorite targets. I do not usually do "BEST OF" blogs and I apologize for all the photos, but they were so hard to edit down.

Fall’s Crazy Quilt

IMG_4093

While I'm tired of reading home blogs that reference NYC fashion week, I feel compelled to make my own connections to current fashion trends. A few weeks ago a NYTimes article entitled "The Crazy Quilt of Fall" caught my eye with its eclectic mashup of prints and textures. It was soon followed by an article about a new exhibit of unusual quilts entitled "Celebrating American Quilts in Books and Shows."

I have always been inspired by so-called "ugly" quilts and patchworks made from cast-off textiles- mens' wool suiting, scraps of bright silk, ticking, feed sack and upholstery fabric. Condition is often an issue with these hodge podge quilts. Wools and silks tend to fray before the sturdier cottons. I find them to still be beautiful and I have several great examples for sale. They can be hung on the wall behind a bed or sofa for a great and graphic effect.

The crazy quilts put me in mind of some other complimentary items. Amber apothecary glass, tole painted trays, warm wood and some lovely color frameable color prints of European folk art patterns.

The Market Basket

Marche

French School Poster c.1960 for sale at http://www.oldschoolmaps.com

These waning days of summer are prime time for farmer's markets around the city and country. My local markets in Windsor Terrace and Grand Army Plaza are bursting with color.

We happen to be in the process of painting and sprucing up our house and the visual feast of the market put me in the mood to decorate with fruit and vegetable related ephemera. I have some lovely and frameable examples of commercial art drawn for seed packets, nursery catalogues and agricultural yearbooks.

I will have a few other farm/market related items out with me at the Brooklyn Flea this weekend including a variety of berry carriers and trugs. They are very useful for sorting and displaying all kinds of items and bring rustic to charm to interiors.

Globe

Globes…so collectible, so decorative, so photogenic! I cannot get enough of them. There is no end to the gorgeous photos of interiors decorated with globes. I like them almost as much as school maps. Put the two together and they make each other even better.

When I first opened my shop the windows were filled with globes and lit up at night (see below).

Then I found this gorgeous photo on pinterest which does mine one (or many) better.

Just a few more wonderful photos of globe collections from the blogosphere below, before I get to my point….

So, my point of writing this post, apart from reminding you of how beautiful the world we live in/on is, is to announce that I have put a wonderful array of globes up for sale at www.oldschoolmaps.com

Among the highlights are a scarce silver ocean 1930's globe, a black ocean "Starlight" globe, a magnetic metal "Air Race"globe, and a couple of glass globe light up or lamp globes.
