The Thing

While browsing the NYTimes style magazine last Sunday, I was intrigued by this elegant lamp in The Thing column.

The Helios lamp, $1,850, workstead.com

The NYTimes writes that this lamp would have "looked at home in Galileo's workshop". I like the way that the lamp brings together industrial parts, 70s polish and glamour and warm, crafty elements. It speaks to me- especially at this time of year when the nights get longer and the rustic summer vibe feels worn out and shabby. I'm ready for a more polished and glow-y look. Many of my recent vintage and antique finds would look spot-on with the Helios lamp.

Antique Copper Working Heat Lamp

To accessorize, I can't think of anything better than these original astronomy plates from Asa Smith’s Illustrated Astronomy, whichwas the most popular American astronomy guide of the 19th century, with numerous diagrams demonstrating or showing  principles of planetary motion and features, other astronomical phenomena, the moon, and the constellations. Originally copyrighted in 1848, numerous editions followed. The prints that I have available are from an 1850s edition.

In his Preface, Smith, the Principal of Public School No. 12, located at 17th Street and Eighth Avenue in New York City, explained that the purpose of this series was “to present all distinguishing principles in physical Astronomy with as few words as possible; but with such ocular demonstrations, by way of diagrams and maps, as shall make the subject easily understood.”

We recently purchased brass sconces from School House Electric with a similar feel. I like them with these Mid-Century maps from my shop (biding their time in our living room).

The maps below, with their mod projections, have a similar 1950s modern feel to the ones above.

Know Your Vegetables

It's the middle of August and the farmer's markets in the city are in full swing…. over-flowing with bright summery vegetables and juicy fruits.

As I drove upstate yesterday to the "Leatherstocking" region of central New York State to attend the Madison-Bouckville antiques week, I passed farm after gorgeous farm. This is a little off the topic, but while I am upstate, I am staying in a yurt on a beautiful property that was once part of the infamous Loomis Lair.

Anyway…with produce on my mind, I was delighted to discover an adorable antique card game entitled "Know Your Vegetables".

Know your vegetables

Probably dating back to the 1910s or 20s, check out the whimsical illustrations and poems. This super-charming game is a little gem.

The art is clearly inspired by seed packets and labels of this period. I have hundreds of these in my collection, but only one "Know Your Vegetables" card game.

Img052 Img341A few other neat pieces of veggie decor to leave you with. Straying from the Americana, here are a few German vegetable charts- black & white engravings from the 1890s. These would make great kitchen wallpaper.

Ice Cream Social

Sundaes

National Ice Cream Day is this Sunday July 19th and, lucky for you, I will be at the Brooklyn Flea (on Sunday in Williamsburg NOT Saturday) with some awesome 1950s uncut advertising sheets depicting delicious sundaes, cones and floats. And, to sweeten the day, The Brooklyn Flea is having their annual ice cream fest.

The prints I have for sale were made in the 1950s by the Weiler Company of Philadelphia, PA. They were a point of sale advertising company that created many original colorful ads for various companies- particularly Breyer's. I have both uncut printer's sheets $35-$55 and individual die cuts $5-$15. Some examples below to whet your appetite.

Due to family obligations, some health issues that need to be tended to and some upcoming buying trips, we will be suspending regular store hours for the next month or so. We will be at the Brooklyn Flea regularly and will be available by appointment at the shop. Regular hours should resume in mid-August with some fresh new merchandise.

The Nifty Fifty

Independence Day is upon us and I'm celebrating both the holiday and the fact that both of my children are away at sleep away camp for the all-American month of July. I've had some rare quiet time to do some reminiscing.

Twenty (or maybe closer to twenty five…ouch) years ago I was making my way back and forth across the country. Crisscrossing the lower forty-eight several times over gave me a great appreciation of the awesome landscapes, culture, food, and flea markets that can be found across our great nation. Back then, I never hit the road without my trusty copy of Jane and Michael Stern's Road Food

Roadfood 1978

They just released an expanded and updated version of Road Food.
Now everyone I know is into food, but back then it was hard to get information about where to eat. My other on-the-road must have was my cassette of Gram Parson's album Return of the Grievous Angel. I learned how to sing harmony by listening to Emmylou Harris sing on that amazing record.

Well…in honor of our country's birthday, and my nostalgia for getting to see more of it, I have some great American merchandise in my shop, on Etsy and at the Brooklyn Flea.

All three (& one more) of these school maps of the US are currently for sale in my Etsy shop.

Get 'em while they're hot. You can also find some nifty pictorial state maps of your home state- or your adopted one-or just one you like. These were printed for the 1939 New York World's Fair's Pageant of the States. If you don't see the state you want, e-mail me. I have them all.

I will have these state maps and a couple of other neat items for the holiday with me at the Brooklyn Flea this Sunday in Williamsburg, including these fun games. The boards would make great wall decor.
