A Friend of WPA in Need

Dear customers, friends and neighbors of Windsor Place Antiques,

I’m reaching out on behalf of my friend, neighbor and former colleague Marianne Butler. Marianne worked in the shop nearly five years ago when I was just getting started. She was between photo editing jobs and looking for local work to tide her over until the next fickle, but glamorous publishing gig. We hit it off immediately and she helped me get the shop up and running. Many of you might remember her lovely smile from those early days. She ultimately left WPA for another stint at Conde Nast, but we crossed paths frequently as we live on the same block and we both helped care for an elderly neighbor.

Unfortunately, Marianne has recently been battling cancer and has lost the job that she was told would be waiting for her when she was well enough to go back to work. I’ve been so impressed with her generosity and her ability to take care of herself, stay positive and to get through this ordeal. Here’s a link to more of Marianne’s story and to help if you can:

Top 3 New Finds: Blue Flower Botanicals, Butterflies & Ice Cream Advertising

Kick off summer with some seasonally-appropriate decorations. I have spent the last few months reeling in an enormous haul of new and exciting merchandise- including an estate of very fine hand-colored natural history prints from the 1700s and 1800s. Expect to see lots of new things in the shop and at the Brooklyn Flea and don’t hesitate to contact me with any queries or special requests.

Here are some of my favorite new finds…

Blue Flower Botanicals

The first two plates pictured,  were done by Sir Joseph Paxton between 1834-1849, and the third plate (Alpine Columbine) was done by George Loddiges for Loddige’s Botanical Cabinet in 1822. All three are beautifully hand-colored.

Butterfly and Moth Prints

The two plates below are of unknown (at least to me) origin, but I believe them to be French and printed between 1790-1820. The hand-coloring is super-vibrant and jewel-toned.

Ice Cream Advertising

The posters below are uncut advertising sheets of die cuts. They were printed in the 1950s by the Weiler Company of Philadelphia, PA. Back in the day, this company did a lot of point of sale advertising for Breyer’s Ice Cream. The uncut sheets have a great Warholesque look. The hyper-detailed colorized and illustrated photos epitomize mid-20th century commercial style.

Make A Pilgrimage to Brimfield: Antiques Mecca

images

It’s that time of year again….time for the biggest and best antique show of the year…Brimfield! If you’ve always wanted to go, or if you’re looking for something specific, you should seriously consider making the trek. While the show takes place three times a year (in May, July & September) May is definitely the one to attend. Thousands and thousands of dealers will be there with their freshest stuff. I’ll be bringing unseen merchandise that I’ve kept aside all year. I will be set up in Mahogany Ridge from Tuesday May 8th through Saturday May 12th.

Brimfield is a not-to-be-missed experience for vintage, antique and design aficionados.

If you’re thinking of going and need a little logistical assistance, I have private lodging available for Thursday and Friday nights (May 10th & 11th) in a lovely lake house nearby that I rented for the week. It can be nearly impossible to find a place to stay and you need at least a few days to see the show. E-mail me at rebecca@windsorplaceantiques.com if you’re interested in the room for those nights.

Free expert advice on seeing the show included!

Big doings here at Windsor Place Antiques: We have a beautiful brand new website. My first big goal of 2018 accomplished….with the help of Untitled Pictures Inc.

Included in the new website is a “News” column (aka blog) , in which we will be sharing exciting new finds, new venues and events. I’m looking forward to regularly sharing photos of my latest and greatest finds. This will give you a good idea of what you can look forward to seeing in the shop, at the Brooklyn Flea or on Etsy. Speaking of Etsy, my next major project of 2018 is to greatly expand our Etsy offerings.

Without further ado, here are some of our most recent exciting finds

Exotic Bird Lithographs-

These vintage prints are by Axel Amchastegui, from Love Life of The Birds, 1952. Axel Amchastegui is considered one of the best wildlife illustrators of the last 100 years. Axel was born in 1921 in Cordoba, Argentina, and was a self taught artist. He loved the beauty of the natural environment in which he grew up, raised by his grandmother and parents to have a love of all the creatures of the wild. He developed a unique technique for his paintings using Chinese inks and watercolors. There is now a tremendous appreciation for Axel Amchastegui’s work. Argentina has designed several postage stamps from his paintings.

While not as old as many of the prints that we offer, these original lithographs are of very fine quality and printing technique.

We’re Taking A Short Spring Break

Happy Passover & Happy Easter to all of our friends & customers! We're taking a short spring break this week to celebrate the holidays and to spend a little time vacationing in warmer climes.

Both the shop & the Industry City location will be closed this week & coming weekend.

When we return we will be in our new outdoor Brooklyn Flea locations- opening April 7th & April 8th. The Brooklyn Flea will be in Industry City on Saturdays (on the Factory Floor and in the adjacent courtyard) and in DUMBO on Sundays. The shop will be open, as usual from Thursday, April 4th on.

On our return, we will be bringing out lots of new merchandise for spring decorating- picnic baskets, enamelware, colorful prints, trays, and quilts. Hopefully. the weather will cooperate with our vernal visions.
