Starry Summer Nights

Il_570xN.600344239_ri49June is here and with it comes warm nights under the stars-preferably away from the big city lights where you can bask in the glory of the starry night sky.

One of the most common requests from my customers is for cosmography and astronomy related prints and charts. They are actually quite rare. There are some nice reproductions on the market, but if you are like me and you like original old pieces, you have to look pretty hard to find them. I have some nice cosmos-related items in my shop at the moment to bring a little bit of the nocturnal outside in.

Vintage Jelly Jars & Mother’s Day Goodies

On a recent trip I found several large collections of vintage jelly jars in all kinds of shapes and sizes. I have a major crush on them at the moment.

To be clear:  A jelly jar is not the same thing as a canning or mason jar.  A true jelly jar has a thin fitted (not threaded) metal cap or cover.  Some folks call the smaller sizes of canning jars "jelly jars" – especially the quilted styles, but I do not agree with this.

Jelly jars make wonderful storing and serving vessels.  They can go right from the fridge to the table and hold other condiments such as mustard or chutneys.

Some Mid Century Jelly Jars even have adorable patterned or decorated lids.

Images-4Some jelly jars were very squat, like ramekins, while some were taller and tapered at the bottom making them nifty little drinking glasses.

My favorite jelly jars were made in the 1940s by the Hazel Atlas Company. They have beautiful, thick vertical ridges in the glass. The glass is heavy and feels just perfect in hand. They are, in fact, my favorite wine glasses- a great use for them if you happen to find some without the lids.

Enough about jars! Moving on to Mother's Day….Many years ago, right after my daughter was born, while road tripping from NYC to visit some friends in Asheville, NC, I passed on a T-shirt at a truck stop that read "If Momma Ain't Happy Ain't Nobody Happy"…..How true that turned out to be. So make your mommas, wives and daughters happy and give them some gorgeous flowers in a vintage jar, pretty hankies, the perfect print or a lovely brooch. The shop will be brimming and blooming with gifts.

This jar even has Mom's name on it! Only one available.

It's hard for me to believe, but I am entering my 7th season at the Brooklyn Flea. I have been there since the beginning of this now established institution of Brooklyn hipsterdom, artisanal foods, quirky design and sartorial flair. As I prepare my wares for the reopening of the original Ft. Greene flea this Saturday, I am taking a little stroll down memory lane and digging out some photos, shown below, of my very first day at the Flea.

April 2008

There was definitely a more feminine (framed hankies), shabby chic (chenille bed spreads and vintage chippy mirrors) kind of feel to my flea booth back in April of 2008. Over the years I have shed some of these inclinations and veered toward a more historical Americana aesthetic. I was already amassing old school maps and charts back in 2008, but it had yet to blossom into a full-fledged obsession. Stay tuned this spring for some truly great new additions to my classroom inventory- I just unearthed two huge lots of wonderful maps.

Just for fun (or self-indulgence) I thought I would share some photos of interiors that inspired me back in 2008.

For a bit of contrast, there were some absolutely gorgeous and inspiring interiors in the New York Times just this week that felt as if I could have dreamed them up….or designed them myself.
